Design and specification changes between Tesla Model 3 2018 and 2020 model years and between LR AWD and SR+ models
My wife and I love our Model 3s. This article is not meant to degrade anybody's experience, they're amazing vehicles, it's just meant to inform and help set expectations. Tesla has always made changes to their cars any time of year they feel like, I knew that going in. There's a huge price difference between my two Model 3s. I'm frankly surprised they're as similar as they are, and I’m very grateful that each model came out just in time for our needs. Given reader and viewer feedback, I've been able to add to this list and make the article a better supplement to my 4K up-close video.

Disclosure: My family owns no stock in Tesla. Tesla doesn't advertise at TinkerTry, or anywhere else, and this is not a sponsored post. We financed the purchase of two Tesla Model 3s, replacing my 2006 Honda Civic Hybrid in December of 2018 and replacing my wife's 2005 Honda Civic EX in December of 2019. These big moves to an all electric household were an expression of our mutual desire to go green, avoid gasoline, be safe, have fun, and save money in the long run. Mostly for my job, I drive a lot, 25,000 miles in 2019 for example, and I thoroughly enjoy sharing what I've learned with you. I hope you can tell!
I'm summarizing the differences between our road trip car, our 2018 Tesla Model 3 Long Range All Wheel Drive VIN# 119,xxx manufactured in November of 2018, and my wife's shorter trip car, her 2020 Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus VIN# 612,XXX manufactured in December of 2019. Tesla makes changes any time of year, and our cars were only made 13 months apart. This article is a changelog of sorts, based on first-hand observations. I could not find all this information any single other site, so I decided to pull the information together below to help prospective buyers. See also:

Items changed from 2018 to 2020 for all Tesla Model 3 trim levels
Removed / Decreased
-
Dead pedals removed October of 2019, see Model 3 - Dead Pedal Cover Missing? and Dead pedal - dead in 2020.
-
Glass roof color (rainbow glass) no longer appears orange when wet from the special UV coating, changed as early as September 2019. I'm not sure what treatment type replaced it with the new supplier, see also related discussion at TMC.
-
Plastic grocery bag clips in frunk removed November 2019. See No Frunk Bag Hooks. According to this post, the part #s are 1116002-00-C for the LEFT hook and 1116003-00-C for the RIGHT hook.
-
Window Sticker
Also known as a Monroney sticker, this 11" x 17" sheet of paper was found inside our 2018. It was not stuck on the window, thankfully, and has no adhesive. There was no window sticker in our 2020 at delivery at Mount Kisco, NY on December 17 2019. Not sure if this was just an oversight at this location. I asked if I can get an electronic copy of it from Tesla as it's not anywhere in the tesla.com account delivery papers, and they delivered! Details/images below. -
Gen 2 NEMA Adapter - NEMA 14-50
This adapter for the Mobile Charging Connector is no longer included as of April of 2019. It's needed by anybody who has had an electrician install a 50 amp NEMA 14-50 socket for much faster charging. The adapter is available for $35 from Tesla Shop. Referred to loosely as a dogbone or dongle adapter. See discussion here. -
One Model 3 Phone Charging Cable - Micro USB and One Model 3 Phone Charging Cable - Lightning + USB-C Bundle. Removed May 2019.
-
HomeLink removed May 2019. Only available to purchase separately at Tesla as Automatic Garage Opener.
- Trunk rear left storage well went from fully covered in carpeting to a combination of carpet and plastic.
Changed
-
Vegan Steering Wheel. Tesla announced Model 3 interior is now 100% leather free in August of 2019, see also Tesla announces Model 3 interior is now 100% leather-free. My wife isn't fond of the smell, and says it leaves a scent on her fingers. I'm actually quite ok with the mild synthetic odor.
-
Pull tab for emergency charge port unlock is now a pull ring.
- Model Year Cut-off changed from January 1 to November 1. In 2018, Model 3s made in that year were called 2018 model year vehicles. In 2019, all vehicles made after November 1st were called 2020 model year vehicles, see also my details in the VIN decoder below. This explains why our cars, manufactured in Freemont CA only 13 months apart (Nov 2018 and Dec 2019) are 2018 and 2020 model years. See also MASTER THREAD: 2020 model year Model 3 and the differences, if any, from 2019 at Tesla Motors Club forums.
-
My front fenders weren't touching the body at the A-pillar on my 2018, but for some, they did. This could cause rubbing when the car is moving, which could eventually cause paint-wear-through and rust. There's a slightly larger gap in our 2020. This issue for some is discussed here and shown by Tech Forum here.
- VIN Sticker
Red Tesla logo added to the top-right corner of the B pillar sticker labeled "MFD BY TESLA, INC."
Added / Increased
-
Noise emitter for below 18 mph and reverse. See Tesla Model 3 reportedly gets pedestrian noisemaker ahead of NHTSA mandate:
The noisemakers, which are designed to emit a sound while vehicles are moving below 19 mph in forward and reverse, have reportedly been installed on Model 3 units that were built since September 1, 2019.
-
Autopilot is now standard:
Autopilot enables your car to steer, accelerate and brake automatically within its lane.
Current Autopilot features require active driver supervision and do not make the vehicle autonomous. -
Traffic Aware Cruise Control is now standard, see Autopilot above.
-
The plastic trim around the 1/3 rear seat-back latch is now a little larger, seen pictured from inside the trunk in the pictures below.
-
The trunk is now sealed off from the cabin. There used to be a large opening in the metal underside of the rear trunk deck, it became a glass-weave like fabric in January 2019, and as of July of 2019, it's now solid metal. See the apparent difference pictured below. I'm looking into whether this aftermark accessory does anything to reduce cabin noise, particularly for rear seat passengers. I'll detail the results here in my accessories article.
-
Under bumper cut-out for trailer hitch.
Apparently added in June of 2019 including our SR+. See also 2019 Model 3 Performance has a hitch cover, and my pictures below. - Plastic rear license plate holder is now standard, not pictured (yet).

Two metal clips seen in the Tesla Model 3 rear seat cushion removal for camping or cargo video at the back of the rear seat bottom cushion are no longer present in the 2020.
-
On-screen and mobile app rear seat heater controls
The controls went missing in September of 2016. The coils are there in the rear seats and are connected, and I physically checked to be sure. See Tesla Model 3 SR+ owners to get heated rear seats through OTA update. -
LED fog lamps removed July 2019, see discussion and SR + missing features.
-
Home charging speed from 48 amps to 32 amps maximum, confirmed at Tesla here. This also means that using the SR+'s included Gen 2 Mobile Connector charger connected with a Tesla NEMA 14-50 adapter to our second NEMA 14-50 wall outlet we had installed a year ago gives my wife SR+ the top 32 amp charging speed. We may save up and buy another Gen 2 Mobile Connector Bundle at Tesla Shop for $275 to keep in the SR+ once they're back in stock, but for now, we'll just leave the one that came with my LR coiled up in that long road trip car's frunk. It's worth noting that for us, having an electrician install a 60 amp circuit hard-wired to a $500 Silver or Gloss Black Wall Connector would get our charge rate up to the max 48 amps Long Range variants can handle. But for her SR+, such an expense would make little sense, given those Tesla Wall Connectors won't charge any faster than the $275 Mobile Connector adapter the SR+ came with. Also notice the very small difference of 35 mi/hr versus 33 mi/hr charging rates for the LR vs SR+, seen pictured above-right. While the LR charges at a faster rate than the SR+, it's also a bigger battery to charge. So the two Model 3s wind up charging at very similar speeds overall. For us, we can both get from 5% to 90% in about 6 and a half hours.

Vehicle Emissions Control Information Sticker
just above the trunk's latch has changed in style, but both indicate the model year and test group JTSLV00.0L23. The 2018 is Evaporative Family JTSLR0000L23, and the 2020 is Evaporative Family LTSLR0000L13. I'm guessing the emissions test was rather fast and easy to perform ;). - Maximum Supercharger V3 speed from 250kW to 170kW. Sources - Teslarati and InsideEVs.

Source - Wikipedia. Detailed specifications comparisons at TinkerTry here.
- Tire Pressure
Raised 42 psi to 45 psi. Source - B pillar sticker behind front driver-side door.
- Two white stickers
Added to the back of the rear seats visible from the trunk, easily peeled off. Not sure if this was just an oversight/human error, or if everybody has these. I only have one data point, and this picture gallery from somebody on eBay that apparently has the same stickers.
Same
- Maximum Supercharger V2 speed is 150kW for any Model 3. Source - CleanTechnica.
- Tesla's order pages used to say that the cool stuff listed below was going to be only available on the Long Range models. Gladly, they've now published the Premium Connectivity page with all the details of what your $9.99 per month will get you on all trim levels, they're called Connectivity Packages:
- Navigation
- Live Traffic Visualization
- Satellite-View Maps
- Video Streaming*
- Caraoke*
- Music Streaming*
- Internet Browser*
[asterisk] Accessible over Wi-Fi for Standard Connectivity
Some features such as Caraoke and video streaming are not supported on some cars based on hardware configuration. Review your release notes to confirm feature availability in your Tesla.
That last sentence is a little cryptic. It seems to indicate that Caraoke and Music Streaming only work when on WiFi on the Standard Range Plus. If that's the case, in a pinch, you can get on WiFi when you're away from home by connecting to your phone's hotspot. Eventually, Tesla Superchargers are said to be planning to offer WiFi hotspots. As for my own tests on the 3 week old SR+, I turned off WiFi then tested Spotify, TuneIn, YouTube, and Netflix, and they all worked fine. Our SR+ indicates Premium Connectivity is active until January 17 2020 (30 days from delivery). Last week. I signed both cars up for Premium Connectivity, and for the 2018 Model 3, it becomes active on January 4 2020.
Video
My first draft like video was created in haste the day we took delivery of our 2020 Tesla Model 3 SR+. The sound level and mic were poor, and the edits minimal. Please skip this one and check out the next video listed below instead.
Much improved video and audio and clarity is now available.

VINs Decoded
TeslaTap is an awesome site, here's their VIN Decoder results for my 2 vehicles, with the last 3 digits of the VIN blurred out.
I'm comparing Model 3 variants here, with our family's two Model 3s bolded and referenced as examples, using Teslarati's MY2017 VIN DECODER. For Digit 10, this 2017 vintage decoder appears to have the Model Year in error though, so I've corrected that. Also, for the 8th digit, I've been told by turns2stone that "C" indicates the Performance Model (presumably instead of "4"), so I added that below as well.
I've added each of my Model 3 VINs above the bolded VIN digit being decoded.

Most days you'll charge to 90% and you may forget to charge to 100% right before a long trip. So practically speaking, comparing at 90% is 279 miles vs. 225 miles of range, a difference of 19%. This would be true for anything above room temp, around 68°F. In extreme cold temperatures around 15°F, I've been seeing about a 40% loss in range, similar to what Electrek says here, and the graph seen here. So here's how I derive more practical driving range estimates to set expectations for winter buyers/drivers, which includes my TeslaFi stats gathered automatically during my year-long/25,000 miles of various weather driving:
0.6 x 274 miles at 90% charge at 15°F = 164 miles of range for LR AWD
0.6 x 222 miles at 90% charge at 15°F = 133 miles of range for SR+
1.0 x 274 miles at 90% charge at 68°F = 274 miles of range for LR AWD
1.0 x 222 miles at 90% charge at 68°F = 222 miles of range for SR+

Jan 04 2020 Update
Earlier version of this article was written in a way to clearly indicate the Tesla Model 3 LR variants can handle 48 amp charging at home. This has now been resolved.

See No more auto-dimming mirrors on Model 3?, which is also true of all Model Y deliveries so far, something I inquired about here. Seems like an odd decision, is it a supply constraint issue, or mere cost cutting? If it's cost-cutting, why do it for all trim levels?
