If you used Microsoft IntelliPoint drivers, and you upgraded from Windows 7 to 8 but have Bluetooth mouse issues, here's a fix

If you used Microsoft IntelliPoint drivers under Windows 7 for your Bluetooth mouse, then upgraded to Windows 8 and have experienced some mouse issues, then this tip may help you. My experience was with a 64 bit Windows 7 to Windows 8 upgrade, but this article likely applies to 32 bit Windows upgraders as well.

Issues I experienced included the Microsoft Bluetooth tranceiver not coming out of suspend mode properly, with this warning in the event log:

The local Bluetooth adapter has failed in an undetermined manner and will not be used. The driver has been unloaded.

I also found that the Bluetooth mouse would occasionally lose it's pairing with my laptop's built-in Bluetooth tranceiver. Or my mouse wheel acceleration settings would sometimes be altered, which suspending and resuming would oddly fix. Finally, I experienced random issues with reliably re-pairing.

Investigating a bit, I headed over to IntelliPoint driver download here, where I noticed the IntelliMouse driver is only available for Windows 7 and earlier OSs. So I found I was better off uninstalling IntelliPoint entirely, going with the newer Windows 8 friendly Mouse and Keyboard Center 2.1 64-bit, which has a Modern UI looking interface, and seems to work more reliably for me. Yeah, under the hood, it's still the same ipoint.exe driver, seen pictured below, but with better ease of install, configuration, and use.

Here's how I resolved my issues, by upgrading properly:

1. Press 'Win+x' and choose 'Device Manager'.
2. Select 'View' menu, select 'Show hidden devices'.
3. In the 'Bluetooth' and 'Mice and other pointing devices' sections, remove all entries that refer to Microsoft branded mice.
4. Press 'Win+x' and choose 'Programs and Features'.
5. Find Microsoft IntelliPoint, uninstall it.
6. Reboot (from your Windows 8 Desktop, press Alt+F4, select 'Restart').
7. Double-click the 'Mouse and Keyboard Center 2.1 64-bit' executable downloaded by choosing your mouse here, and selecting the proper download.
   In my case, the Microsoft Wireless Laser Mouse 8000 site here had a direct link to the Mouse and Keyboard Center 2.1 64-bit, but the general Mouse and Keyboard Center down site appears here.
8. Follow your mouse's Bluetooth pairing procedure to rediscover it, and tweak your mouse settings as needed, there's now a Microsoft Connection Wizard to make that easier, it's right in the new menu that comes up when you press the 'Win' key and type Mouse, pictured below.
