  • WS2012R2E (Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials) is a powerful, versatile product. Since 2013, I've been using it for daily backups of my extended family's 14 PCs, in my home, and over VPN remotely. It's running as a VM under VMware ESXi 5.5.

But WS2012 R2E hasn't always been the simplest to troubleshoot. One of those documents that never made it out of the cluttered TinkerTry drafts article folder was about troubleshooting WS2012R2E.

Nice surprise today, when I was researching a VSS event log entry that happened after shrinking one of my NTFS drives, during a VMware storage vMotion. I stumbled upon something that I had somehow missed before. Microsoft has done the work of pulling together the most common support issues they see folks asking, then posting the solutions publicly. It's about time, and a step in the right direction for self-service support. I wish more companies were this open.

When you read through some of these, you might see some familiar hits, I know I did. Not just bugs, but how, step-by-step information under each of the 5 section header categories.

Admitting you have a problem is the first step to recovery, no?
