  • Yes, I run the very powerful and efficient ESXi 5.5 in my home lab. Yes, the dirty little secret is that Windows 7 Pro has no multi-monitor support via RDP sessions, so I cannot run it on my distant ESXi host, and expect to be able to use my triple monitors. So when it comes to my "daily driver" OS of choice, my Windows 8.1 16GB RAM ThinkPad W520 laptop runs VMware Workstation. Why exactly? This way, I can run a VM of my Windows 7 Professional full-screen, across all three monitors, and have easy access to snapshots and other Workstation-only, developer-focused features, all running very quickly off my 1TB  Samsung SSD. On Monday, December 01, 2014, VMware released VMware Workstation 11, with VMware Player 7 Pro. Yes, that was Cyber Monday, but their 30% off promotion has this happy small print:

The Cyber Monday offers for VMware Fusion 7, VMware Fusion 7 Pro, VMware Workstation 11 and VMware Player 7 Pro ends December 5, 2014 at 11:59pm Pacific Time.

At the moment, I'm having a strange issue with upgrading from the beta, described here, but it's safe to assume I'll get past those soon (yep, been fixed), and be able to report my experience with the enhanced speeds and features VMware touts in the announcement:

State of the Art Performance – VMware Workstation supports the latest Intel 64-bit x86 processors, including the new Haswell microarchitecture for maximum performance. Taking advantage of key new Haswell extensions, the solution also delivers up to 45 percent improvement in CPU intensive operations like multimedia and encryption/decryption compared to Workstation 10.

We’re pleased and excited to announce the worldwide General Availability of VMware Workstation 11 and VMware Player 7 Pro.
Powerful Virtual Machines and Graphics – Create virtual machines with up to 16 vCPUs, 8 TB virtual disks, 64 GB memory, and now 2GB video memory. Graphics-intensive applications can now be given an additional boost by allocating up to 2 GB of video memory per virtual machine.

For most folks, the free-for-non-corporate-use VMware Player 7 would be fine. Note that you'll see the free trial button below, and the free version is still available, basically you just enter a license key into the VMware Player user interface to enable the VMware Player Plus features. VMware Player Pro enables you to quickly and easily create and run virtual machines. The VMware Player user interface is designed to be as easy to use as possible. It is intended for people who need to run virtual machines, typically provided to them by their IT organization, system administrator, instructor, software supplier etc.

VMware Workstation is much more advanced and comes with powerful features including snapshots, cloning, remote connections to vSphere, sharing VMs, advanced Virtual Machines settings and much more. Workstation is designed to be used by technical professionals such as developers, quality assurance engineers, systems engineers, IT administrators, technical support representatives, trainers, etc.

If you're a vExpert, its possible that you'll be offered a VMware Workstation 11 license key next year, see Corey Romero's response to my inquiry here.

Below, you'll see my upgrade invoice, and interesting to note that the license key came up instantly, which I immediately applied to my running copy of VMware Workstation 11, through the Help, Register VMware Workstation menu.
