  • Today, those of us here in Southern New England owe a thank you to Kelser's Matthew Kozloski, who sponsored and ran this fun and educational Hartford VMUG Meeting. The unique outdoors setting made for a picturesque backdrop at the Northwest Park Picnic Pavilion. The opportunity to meet new folks and hear interesting stories was the primary reasons I headed out into the rain today, along with many dedicated fellow IT professionals.

We were all treated to a free BBQ lunch, and an interesting presentation entitled "VMware Presentation: Virtualization Security for the IT Guy/Gal" by Senior Technical Marketing Manager Mike Foley. He started off with interesting tales of recent travels to customer sites near the Great Wall of China and the Israeli West Bank, where he talked to IT Professionals about virtualization security. Those basic security concepts go back thousands of years. Those walls are a little like firewalls. It was an intriguing way to kick things off.

If you're not familiar with Mike Foley, see also the VMware vSphere Blog, including these two posts by Mike that I frankly just spotted myself:

There are no silver bullets in infrastructure security! Good security is about applying layers of defense (a.k.a. Defense in Depth). Unique identities, management/control plane isolation, logging, alerting, etc… All these methods, used together, compliment each other and will help you protect your infrastructure. If one fails, you have the others to cover you. There will always be new challenges...
