Microsoft announces that Windows Server 2012 Essentials is due for release by end of 2012, but Release Candidate available now

    We are now turning our sights towards the Windows Server 2012 Essentials release to manufacturing (RTM). The other Windows Server 2012 editions released to manufacturing at the beginning of August. Our goal has been to release Windows Server 2012 Essentials to manufacturing and make it generally available by the end of 2012, and we remain committed to this target.

    In addition, in the next few weeks we are going to release some additional software that works with our RC release:

    • Windows 8 companion app. Customers will be able to access Windows Server 2012 Essentials through a number of different client apps: a Remote Web Access web browser, our Windows Phone 7 app, and the brand new Windows 8 companion app. We are especially excited about the Windows 8 app because it not only makes it easy to access files and folders on the server, but also supports offline access.
    • Windows Phone app. We have updated our existing Windows Phone app to work with Windows Server 2012 Essentials. The phone app now allows customers to access files and folders on the server.

    I can't say I'm surprised by the 4Q2012 estimate, but I can say I'm a little disappointed. Was hoping to make the big move a whole lot earlier than that, given the anticipated boost to daily backups my tests have shown. I may need to get creative these next few months. But of course, I value the integrity and robustness of my backups above all else, and none of us want to hear that corruption word again. Let's hope we can make the cut-over during the last week of the year, when many IT professionals take time off from their day jobs, and instead tend to their family's gear.

    And this Windows 8 companion app sure sounds interesting!

    After 6 successful years testing then shipping well over 1,000 Xeon D Bundles, Wiredzone had to stop selling them in mid-2021 due to cost, supply, and logistics challenges. So far, Xeon D-1700/2700 (Ice Lake D) was a minor refresh for 2023, with Xeon D-1800/2800 (Granite Rapids D) refresh looking a little better for 2024. More cores, but still just PCIe Gen4 and DDR4. Looking ahead, I'm glad it's Pat Gelsinger at Intel's helm. I'm also grateful to have had the honor of working at VMware when Pat was the CIO there. I'll leave it at that, given the whole Broadcom thing.
