What I've been up to, and what's coming up next...

It's been a busy month, with a tough, manual migration from an old-school Windows 7 32 bit ThinkPad T61 laptop, to a very new touch-enabled Windows 8 64 bit Lenovo Yoga 13. Given the Yoga has no Ethernet port in its slim, essentially sealed SSD only design, backup and bare-metal restore testing posed some new challenges, as did the UEFI BIOS. I did get it all working, booting and cloning over USB 3.0 quickly. Even managed to create a UEFI VM version of the laptop, ready to handle future hardware failures with ease.

Throughout this winter month, somehow power stayed up, despite the deep snow I've been digging out from under. I have a few dozen technical articles and videos to unearth soon as well, with a small teaser list appearing below. So be sure to come on back!

    • Macrium Reflect and recovery boot media testing
    • Acronis True Image and recovery boot media testing
    • EaseUS Todo Backup and recovery boot media testing
    • VMware Converter 5.0.1 failures, and manually cloning using EaseUS Todo Backup
    • creating a VM of Windows XP ThinkPad T30 and Windows 7 32 bit ThinkPad T61, "cloudifying" some legacy in this way, using port forwarding for remote RDP, saving on precious local SSD space
    • deploying babyZilla at secondary location, for offsite replication, which also enables WOL ability for the Yoga 13 on that same network
    • handling an unusual ThinkPad W520 failure, my primary workstation, and system replacement
    • handling a Windows Update breakage problem, also on my primary workstation
    • trying out Amazon CloudFront CDN for much faster image downloads on TinkerTry.com
    • building my vZilla Windows Server 2012 Essentials backup server over again from scratch, given there's no upgrade path from the Release Candidate I've been running
